In the late 80′s I had this idea, and not a little bit of delusion, that I could take all 3600 lines of text in Shakespeare’s Richard III (wiki) and turn them into something musical. It didn’t matter that nobody before had managed such a monstrous task. I could do it. Sure. I even talked to a director about staging the show — after having completed two songs (!). He was supportive, but wanted to hear back when I had more done (hey, Art, send me your phone number again, won’t you?). By the late 90′s I had conceded it was unlikely that, at my current rate of composition, I would live long enough to get to the death of Clarence much less Richmond’s arrival…

Act III Scene I. Richard: So wise so young, they say, do never live long.

My father-in-law died on the night of my 40th birthday. It has been one of those defining moments which I go back to in my memory from time to time. This track came about as a reflection of the event. It was written for him, but is really not about him as much as it is a meditation on change and the inevitable ending of all things…

A Century of Grace: A Meditation on a People of God in a House of God

Part meditation and part history-and entirely inspiring-a book focusing on Sacramento’s St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church was honored with the Gold Award for Best Book in Religion at the Independent Book Publishers Association’s 21st annual Benjamin Franklin Awards™ ceremony on May 28 at New York’s Roosevelt Hotel.

The IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards recognizes excellence in independent publishing. A Century of Grace: A Meditation on the People of God in A House of God was written by Father Anthony Garibaldi, O.F.M., pastor of St. Francis of Assisi, and published by Publishers Design Group, an independent publishing firm based in Roseville, CA.

Published on the 100th anniversary of this historic structure in the City of Sacramento, A Century of Grace captures the lost skills of artisans who attempted to incarnate the divine by surrounding worshipers with an illustrative “catechism” written in stone, glass and religious art. With over 300 full-color photographs, this stunning book is not only an extensive and beautiful record of stained glass, murals, statues, and architecture, but it is also a meditation on Scripture, prayer, Franciscan spirituality, and liturgy in this sacred space.

The Independent Book Publishers Association (www.ibpa-online.org) is the largest association of publishers in the United States representing more than 3500 publishers across the globe. Named in honor of America’s most cherished publisher/printer, the Benjamin Franklin Awards™ recognizes excellence in publishing. Top practitioners in each field judged publications, grouped by genre on editorial and design merit.

A concept work containing three songs that are thematically linked. These songs grew independently of each other, and only after writing was well under way did I become aware that they were three pieces of the same composition. From the start these songs were about the journey of making changes. This piece was a bit like finding your way around a dark room for the first time. There is an excitement in not knowing what you’ll find, but you’re aware that you might stumble and be injured at any moment…
